OOPS
its not the queen's actual birthday today. its some King's birthday but the name was changed to suit which monarch was on the throne.

queen, projectors and idiots
tomorrow is the queen's birthday! therefore, australia still being under the rule of the queen[in name only though. she's the figurehead...], it is a holiday! GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, cause thanks to her, i don't have to wake up at a godforsaken hour and drag myself to school. so, once again, God save the queen! cause if He doesn't, there won't be a holiday. i shall express my gratitude by saying this:
OH WELL. some people...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE QUEEN. know that because of the fact that you exist, the United Kingdom,
OH WELL. some people...

my command of chinese.[which i will admit is rather poor]
i went to the bubble tea shop at union house [its called bubble cup, never fails to remind me of one of the members of the powerpuff girls] and bought greenappleiceblendedwithfruitjellyplease despite it being winter. anyway, you know the plastic sheet they use to seal the cup with? there's always some decorations on it right? this one had a chinese riddle on it:
一座大桥在造得真高真美丽,可是没人能到,那座是什么桥?
i was happy to find i could still read it, and understand it. :) even though i was severely pissed off with most of my chinese school teachers throughout my years of painful torture of learning my mother tongue [my mum studied malay for her second language and my dad is an acs boy. what can i say? how am i supposed to learn chinese? no that its their fault but if you don't speak the language, you're bound to not be fluent in it...], i'm actually ok with the language.
if you don't know the answer to the riddle its a rainbow. as in 天桥/彩虹? i figured that out! haha. anyway, i'm enjoying life without chinese. learning it that is. the malaysians and the honkies speak cantonese, so, *sigh* i can't escape chinese. the singaporeans/ the ones who have studied in singapore all declare that i cannot speak chinese. just because i can't speak it fluently, doesn't mean i don't know the language right? when i asked daddy to help me put a language toolbar in my taskbbar cause i needed to type chinese, he was like you can type chinese meh? IDIOTA. bill you hear me?! IDIOTA.
the 2 voices in my head have something to say[as usual]:
hey! we don't always say something. i mean we've been quiet until fairly recently...
yeah... anyway, melissa cannot speak chinese!
OI!
yeah, you don't. really
remember when the teacher called you to read from the ke ben? you had to refer to the hanyupinyin for every other word!

food. food. FOOD
yet another post within the last few hours.
there's a reason why: i'm trying to abstain from calling a certain friend who is back in singapore. cause its ex and late. i shall sms later, say i'm thinking of you but i can't call you. that should be enough right? i mean people do appreciate calls but i don't think this one would be appreciated, not at such a late hour and from an isomniac.
i was thinking about food again... and suddenly this conversation i had with suet a year ago came to mind: the guy who will win my heart through food is the guy that takes me to dim sum. then, i didn't understand. surely fish and chips, steak, foie gras, duck confit, french onion soup, lobster with linguine in white wine sauce, fresh oysters and all these[note: my favourite western foods these are] were better than dim sum which you could have any day?
and then i realised today,[i guess living away from home teaches you this] that it is really the food you grow up with, the fond memories you have with the food, the friends' conversations over recess food that is your favourite food. its comparable to guys. the guy that you admire and you think is perfect can be, in my case, the western food. nice have have once in a while, best lookswise, but after a while, you realise that there's nothing, no feeling. and then there's the salad guy, good, healthy [influence in the guy's case], also nice to have once in a while but it lacks substance, there's also nothing. and then you have THE ONE. which is like home food/hawker center food, may sometimes not be the best looking, not look the most appealing but it fills you. and there's the warmth of familarity.
needless to say, i miss singapore food. oh my gosh... the things i want to eat...!
oh my gosh i can sense it
yup. she's going to make a list. wanna bet?
yeah. i'll bet with you, not against you.
huh? then what's the point of betting?
so that we both win!
melissa's list of things she wants to eat when she goes back to singapore!

the ginormous gelato from sophia's. look how huge it us in comparison to kaii's face and its only A$6! there were 5 flavours on that thing
i have a thesis statement: all albert house guys are gay. [jia yang & derk hua]
Hmmm.Ming Zid and Jun Beng are gone. all of us, even though most of us weren't very close to them, resent the fact that part of the 'alberters' [or so some people in trinity call us] will be gone. it will definitely change something. Raymond[malaysian] is to have jun beng's room, while a singaporean girl is to have Ming Zid's.

econs and the beauty of different languages
My original econs lecturer is back.
the tut went something like this:
Because in perfect competition, the firm has no choice but to take the price of the goods currently in the market because the output of an individual firm is so small, it cannot possibly affect the price. now, so, that's why perfect competition is called pricetaker. now, MARK! eric tells me he knows you! he's moving to arrow on swanston next year is he not?
the class: *stuned-ness*
he randomly talked to the guys in the middle of the lesson. and tried to guess which country we were from. he guessed malaysia for me. just because i'm sitting next to kendrick, doesn't mean that we're country buddies right? he made a joke out of it though. because i'm singaporean, and kendrick's malaysian, that means we have to be nearby each other.
oh well, what can i say?
if you're living in a hostel with 50 malaysians and 5 honkies, you tend to pick up a few phrases of cantonese and malay. and if you're studying in a school with indos, thais, etc..., you also learn a few essential words in their language. therefore, i now know the f-word in cantonese [as well as a few other vulagarities], malay/ bahasa indonesian and thai. this adds to my list of already known ones: english, mandarin, hokkien, french, tagalog. as the thai guy in my drama class puts it: the first thing you learn in any language is hello, your name and eff you.
BUT, just in case my mum's reading this, i didn't ask to be taught that! the guys always said it so i asked what it meant! really! and so now i know. *innocent smile*
SEE, that's the good thing about living in a multi-national environment. you get to learn about other people's cultures. and to appreciate their language. by learning a few phrases. like, if you ever go to their countries, and you accidentally get into a car accident, at least you know that the driver is telling you to eff off. see how useful that is?
haha. ok. melissa, that was the largest load of crap i've ever heard.
yeah.
I KNOW. BUT WHAT IF MUM'S READING THIS PAGE??
she's not stupid.
yeah, she'll know its crap too
don't forget she's your mum.
oh right. yeah. ok. fine. MUM! this thing was not written by your daughter.
*there, better now?*
not bad. except its YOUR BLOG
toothead.

wow. like seriously, wow.
sigh.
SIGH
well done melissa. well done.
i can't even describe the amount of genius that took!
what did i do?
you don't know?
she doesn't know!
you mean she's as stupid as to not realise it?
my gosh. WOW.
wow? what on earth did i do?!
*silence*
oh. OH.
she's slow
you mean you only just realised she's slow?!
-that's what usually goes on inside my head.
like now for instance, i feel stupid. stupid for even trying.

THE monologue
Melissa's monologue. totally typed from memory. so, not word perfect.
I knew i was bombing, i couldn't get a hold of it. And while i'm babbling, i look out and there's this kid, like 16, and he's yawning and jiggling his legs and reading his program and i just wanted to say "hey kid, i'm with you i can't stand this either" but i couldn't do that so i just keep worse and worse, just drowning. And then i thought i'm not hamlet, i'm no actor, what am i doing here? And then i get to the big job, the soliloquy, and then i thought, oh christ, the hell with it. Just do it!
to be or not to be that is the question
whether 'tis nobler in the mind
to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
or to take arms against a sea of troubles
and by opposing, end them
and i kept going. And i finished the speech, And i look out, the kid listening and the whole audience; complete silence, total focus. And i was hamlet. and it lasted for about 10 more seconds and i was in hell. and i stayed there. but for that one small bit, for that one speech, i had it.
- i hate hamlet Paul Rudnick
and no, i do not hate hamlet. i do not hate shakespeare. in fact i'd rather do an out damned spot anyday over the 10 choices given to us. my monologue's on friday. pray that i do not get stage fright, then trip and fall or forget my lines or suddenly need to go to the loo or all of the above.

xian's 18th & runescape
Xian's 18th birthday was yesterday. it was cool. except that i got cream on my face, thanks to mr lee. GLARES. but what to do? its his birthday. the guys gave him a porn magazine for his birthday, bought from 7 eleven. apparently, faz and chen didn't have enough guts to buy it so they returned to albert house and asked the derks to go along with them. in the end i think it was derk wen who bought it. BUT, if its uncle andrew reading this then: UNCLE ANDREW! XIAN READS PORN REGULARLY! GO CHECK UNDER HIS BED! THERE'S ONE COPY IN BETWEEN THE MATRESS AND THE BED FRAME! haha. xian, you're soooo dead if uncle andrew spot checks your room! we got him a nice decent non-confiscatable scarf. : )
the guys proposed to bash him up while singing happy birthday. so, they sang it extra slow. and when it came to the girls' turn, he looked around for amah and promised never to tease her. and then he looked around for me and announced "mel, you're always tall in my eyes." LIAR. so, we poked him. while he was suspended by 4 guys holding a limb each. i would have whacked him but i realised most girls don't whack people. sadly. it would have been nice to get my revenge. he teases my height(or lack thereof) 24/7. literally. don't forget that he's my neighbour.
anyway, to the birthday boy: illegitimate uncle! hope you had a happy seventeenth. grow up a bit can? yup. and stop telling me i'm short dammit.
I MISS RUNESCAPE ALL OF A SUDDEN. argh. i want to kill a cow and get the cowhide and sell it on the grand exchange. i wonder how much its changed. the prices i mean... when i told one of the guys i miss runescape suddenly and started telling him about the cowhide thingy and the full black armour i have and the noobs that overtake the game, he was like wow, i'm impressed. and i was like thinking, oh my gosh. typical male who thinks girls are only good for shopping and dresses. WAKE UP MAN. but seriously, i'm considered fairly noobish in runescape. i don't really like combat cause you can die anytime. and you can only keep your 3 most valuable items. SAD RIGHT. but i like getting rich! haha. you're such a materialistic girl meliss.
ah. i should learn to play dota or dablo. those don't suck my mbs.
